Being there
Bill Thompson from the BBC writes about the importance of being there. Even with new technologies which make remote access to events easier, there is something different about being present. The online line and remote options really open up possibilities when it is not possible to be where a talk, presentation or seminar are. Time differences can be a bit tricky. All the online events I have been interested in lately seem to be at 2.00am my local time.

I'd agree, being present, with full access to the vibes of the room is a great buzz and just as rewarding and invigorating as listening to the presenattion itself.
At least Bill made note that often what prevents us "being there" are the financial and geographic restrictions of transport. Mind you, I did find it a little disconcerting when he mentioned sitting in one presentation whilst listening to another through an earpiece - I think that may be taking multi-tasking to a new level.
We want it all - to be able to be present if possible and to be able to participate remotely if we can't "be there". More than that, we also want to go back and revisit these presentations and online access makes that possible - if I can't make the 2am presentaion I'd still like to participate - but it's here where I think we fail ourselves most. More often than not we provide immediate real-time access to events, etc but we rarely store them/make them available for later re-use (at least the ones I'm interested in). There's also the small dicotomy that if I've paid $$$ to attend an event should that event then be freely available online?
